we need government reform befor we need health care reform
The cause of Americans having a far shorter lifespan any other industrialized nation is having a dismal health care system which leaves 1 in 3 Ameicans without access to health care and that die because of the insurance takeover of the US health care system. The third world US hea;th care system leads to shorter lives. That's the cause and effect.
Correlation does not imply causation
This piece was really well done. This is the biggest problem in the US health care system — insurance is too prevalent.
They should do a follow up on why this is...(government)
I agree, most health economists...well all serious health economists know that health insurance shouldn't be connected to employment!
All the healthy people who take care of themselves, eat healthy, exercise, don't smoke or drink, are going to be paying for the people who are abusing themselves and don't care. All of those fools who were boycotting Whole Foods because the CEO says we shouldn't go toward socialized medicine — they can't see that THEY, the healthy elite, will be screwed under the new plan. The incentive will be to use as much as you can, and most people will. Doctors tell me that many abuse the system now.
And that is because the GOVERNMENT froze wages in the '50's so employers started providing health insurance as an extra incentive. There is no reason our insurance or health care still needs to be pinned to our employers — back then, you could work for a company your whole working life but those days are GONE — why can't we keep our health insurance private and not dependent upon any employer? Every time the government gets into anything, it screws things up.
BTW, I lived and worked in the US for seven years. How long did you live and work in Canada to explain your infinitely small knowledge of Canadian health care? I know American health care because I lived there and used it.
That comes from your own CIA Factbook, BTW.
In life expectancy, Canada ranks 8th in the world and the US ranks 50th. If your health care system were so good, why do you live such short lives?
You have insurance company bureaucrats making your medical decisions.
How do you Americans figure you know more aout Canadian health care than Canadians do? What most American idiots know about Canadian health care has no resemblance to REAL Canadian health care. Ask about 95% of Canadians instead of the insurance compasny bureaucrats that run your hea;th care system and make your medical decisions. Here we have physicians to make help us with our medical decisons and government or anyone else has no role in that.
Ask any Canadian. We would NEVER change our system to your failed insurance-run and insurance rationed system. We have far better health care than most of you dumb Americans. You can beat your chest all you want but we all laugh at your health care system as being very low access, very low quality, and very poor outcomes for most Amercians compared to Canadian hea;th care. 92% to 97% of Canadians would NEVER touch an American style insurance run and rationed system with a ten foot pole.
Your devotion to the religion of liberalism has blinded you to reality.
People in Canada have knee replacements within 60 days in most cases. You Americans have no real knowledge of Canadian health care, just what the insurance companies who run the US health care system tell you to believe, which is 98% false. .
You know nothing about Canadian health care. Listen to a Canadian, who know. It is usually 60 days for a knee replacement here in Canada. I lived in both Canada and the US, and actually USED both systems. US insurance-run health care is pathetically poor and rationed compared to Canadian hea;th care.
Wow, you are clueless and totally backward. The average wait in Canada is 5-7 years for that procedure, less than 3 months in the US.
Please just move to Canada (or maybe Cuba) if it is so perfect and stop trying to destroy the US...
Leave us alone and stop pushing you Govt down everyones throats like 1930s Germany.
@pismo10 Don't bother with murphy...she is very stubborn...the Canadian system is perfect as far as she is concerned...even though her main arguments NEVER hold...she sincerely thinks she can change peoples' minds through youtube.
If that knee replacement patient were a Canadian they would probably have that knee replacement within 60 days, 90 days at the outside, not 20 years as they would wait in the US.
Many Americans have a wait of decades for surgery. If a 45 year old needs a knee replacement and can't afford insurance, they have a wait time of 20 years for their surgery until they get Medicare to be able to have the surgery.
A handful of Canadians go to the US for treatment and most are people who think their condition is worse than their own physicans say it is. On the other hand, 1.5 MILLION Americans come to Canada for treatment and surgery they can't afford in the US.
No, not true. US insurtance companies ration a thousand timnes more by denial and recission than ANY government would ever think of. If you compare insurance-run health care to Medicare or the Canadian system, it's in the US insurance-run system that rationing occurs based on the insurance companies bottom line. .
That's a myth that only uninformed Americans believe. Many Americans wait longer than Canadians. People in Canada with purely elective procedures may wait a month or two. Anyone seriously ill is looked after immediately. Canadians don't know anything about waiting lists. Only Americans know about Canadian waiting lists. How do Americans know more about Canadian health carfe than Canadians do anyway? Because hey don't know what they're talking about, that's why.
The Canadian system is far more rationed than the US. The US will become rationed under govt control.
Canadians have access to a waiting list, not healthcare. That is why they flock to the US for procedures. Gee I wonder why...?
