Health Care Reform: The Hank Factor

vlogbrothers asked:

In which John, who is kind of a fiscal conservative, uses the example of Hank to show how the current American health care system disincentivizes economic growth and entrepreneurship and argues that a public insurance option (even like the hodgepodge one in Montana) does not result in public bankruptcy but a more efficient and productive economy. No one said anything about denying the people who need help. Nice try, no and no there are no bureaucrats protected by the state running private businesses.

No the point isn't that they don't care. As was pointed out the problem is that there is no incentive to innovate or take risks in creating new services if there is no incentive to save money or of reward...

You can help other people you know with out the state deciding how...god...hard concepts I know...

  2. mollen19:

theres nothing moral in keeping for yourself what other people need because of your own greed and pompous ego.and theres no bureaucrats running private enterprize?

cant government employed people care for the work they do,give them a break, just because a doctor or teacher isnt motivated by having more than others doesnt mean they are bad persons...

if you dont like the idea of humans taking care of one and another, theres lots of independence and freedom (from giving) in the jungle somewhere

  3. EasyEs:

The vast majority of people do pay taxes. Or pay through the lost oppurtunity that high taxes create.

There is nothing moral about making someone else pay for your health care if you can your self...

Run by the people? You mean bureaucrats who have very little fear of losing their job and have little to no incentive to increase efficiency and plug money leaks, because they know any mistake they make will be covered up and forgotten come election year.

  4. mollen19:

and everyone pays taxes? so what, and actually its run for the people by the people because the people are the taxpayers

  5. EasyEs:

It isn't free, you pay for it through taxes, call it by the real name government run...

  6. mollen19:

no that makes you a Canadian... and my fellow countrymen are danish and we got free healthcare, education (all the way) etc. etc.

  7. EasyEs:

I am Canadian and have experienced our health care system...I want to see more market based reforms in the system, and would like to see the USA move away from greater government health care and towards the market more.

Does that by default make me a ****** in your eyes as you slandered your fellow countryman...?

  8. phillipmarch22:

Expensive insurance? And after you buy that policy do you think your covered? Just wait till you need by-pass surgery or chemotherapy! They will drop you like a bad transmission!

  9. mollen19:

your argument fails because it involves the ooh boo terrible terrible socialism, and a black man as president, no neocon can see through that

ulcerated colitis can be simply cured with nutrition like a healthy diet, PURPLE CABBAGE JUICE & Sangre de Drago

in fact there is a study that gave cabbage juice to inmates with this issue and solved the problem in weeks...you must drink the cabbage juice within the first minute of juicing as a certain enzyme dies of quick.

Hypocrites said: let thy food be thy medicine...humanity has simply lost their way :-[

Health is a Choice!..that one must choose!

Hank needs to get a part time job and buy some expensive insurance. Maybe a change in diet too. How many people does hank employ? His entrepreneur (ship) will take a hit broadside if he wants to grow his business. He will have to insure the emplolyees. How does that encourage growth?

I have Dystonia (dystonia is like the baby of MS and Parkinsons) and I went from working for a big company because 1.I ENJOYED my job 2. I wanted to have money saved when I retired unlike my parents. For 3 years I worked hard and got my «life plan» in order. House,Car,Furniture...Then BOOM a progressive neurological disorder that for a year they could not diagnose and cost ME OUT OF POCKET WITH INSURANCE 22K.

    and thats why i

Damn, he buys a new car in pills in little over two years.

    Ouch.

    Save Hank, save the world.

    Heroes reference, anyone?

    No?

  16. jlbrown1980:

Yeah, the Case for Killing Granny showed just what the government wants for this shitty health care and chipping us like animals. Fuckin pathetic. I'm so happy I deployed 3 times as an Infantryman for our government to turn us into a Socialistic Society. We're terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan, but since we're the military the sheep don't see it that way; even though it's the definition.

  17. ihearttheplanet:

i thibk the basic problem is a clear divide in values, some believe you should work for your living and things such as health care are a by product of this othres would say that health care is a right and it is only just human and compassionate to help others if they have less money than you. The problem wioth these two view pionts is that they are both very broad and do not take into to account the indvidiuals in each case, which i suppose is the problem with all policies

  18. landluvver:

How about knocking off the arguement against health insurance companies and looking at the meat of the bill (what they'll show you) and see what it does to your care and costs. It was promised to cut costs (CBO says no) reduce deficit (CBO says no) create competition (so would allowing intrastate commerce). With a massive influx of new entitlements comes longer lines, less care and yes, Govt. can control what you receive. This is not the right solution, but theyre in a hurry to make more history

    Here's an accurate statistic::

I am one of the 52 mil uninsured & I am packin approx $400,000 in med problems...which I self medicate & have relatively under control...

If I am FORCED to BUY into that 3000 pg pile of crap insurance I will guarantee YOU will go BROKE paying for me...

Statistically most of the 52 million uninsured are HIGH RISK HI $ Uninsurables, which if placed into this plan WILL BANKRUPT SYSTEM...

  20. TacticusPrime:

Wait there are 1.3 million Americans over the age of 65 who don't have Medicare? They can't all be independently wealthy, what are they doing?

  21. ohallorandeirdre:

My mom has that too. In Ireland. And even though she got operated on YEARS ago, still has problems getting insured too- they eventually give it to her, but for lots of money. Understand the shittiness of the situation.

  22. ndes0532:

wouldn't the more logical conclusion be to stop encouraging people to be poor or work for a big company? (i don't see how somebody could be en- or disencouraged from being old)

  23. TheChadley1000:

Of the 47 mil uninsured, 45.7 mil are under 65 and making them eligible for insurance. 79% are US nationals, with 21% being a mixture of legal and illegal immigrants. This research is found from the nonpartisan Kaiser family foundation. I suggest to anyone putting across figures in future, to get them from reliable sources and actual research organisations — NOT MAGAZINES OR BIAS NEWSPAPERS!

  24. TheChadley1000:

I checked the link given to back up the stats and it didn't work, instead though it took me to the liberty pages. Most of the info there is articles from newspapers and is the opinion of the author! Bigboss, you are sourcing your data from the worst places! Why not go to a non partisan source where they have an unbiased viewpoint! Thats where the honestly lies! You can't misrepresent data like that, you have to get ACTUAL figures not some guys views and use it matter of factly!

  25. TheChadley1000:

By turning down treatment, or reducing the denial rate, people are given alternative treatment, and more of it, as it will not cure the person, no thats too costly, but it will help them live with it and in the long run make money for the drug companies as this person will have to continue the treatment fro much longer then necessary. The US system is flawed in too many ways. Richest country in the world with advanced medicine and facilities, yet only 37th in the world in health care!
